Choking baby saved by deputy at Bonelli Park - Photos

Deputy Saves Baby's Life at County Park

(Photos of baby and deputy attached)

On May 27, 2012, at 5:34 pm, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Parks Bureau Deputies Joe Chavez and Kevin Johnson were assisting Los Angeles County Lifeguards on a rescue call of a child with a head injury at Bonelli Park.

While there, a mother approached the deputies screaming that her baby was not breathing.

Deputy Chavez immediately ran to the location of her baby. Deputy Johnson flagged down the arriving Los Angeles County Fire Department Paramedics who were there to assist the child with a head injury.

Deputy Chavez quickly assessed the baby and saw she was blue and not breathing. He then checked the airway for any obstructions and dislodged the debris from the infant’s airway allowing her to breath. The debris was food.

The 15-month-old girl (SEE PHOTOS) was transported to a local hospital by Los Angeles County Fire Department firefighters and is now back at home doing fine.

The child's mom, a resident of La Puente, said she was very grateful the deputy saved her baby.

Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park is located at 120 Via Verde Drive, San Dimas.
